German Christmas markets are always associated with mulled wine, or Gluehwein to be precise. Hot drinks are in, cold drinks at out. It is December after all. But what about those who visit the Christmas market with no intention to drink mulled wine. What can they drink? And can I drink beer at a Christmas market in Germany?
Did you know?
The Christmas market in Cologne is visited by around 4 million people each year. It’s Germany’s most visited Christmas market.
So can I drink beer at the Christmas Market?
German Christmas markets traditionally don’t sell beer. But today, that has changed a little. Although it does depend on the size of the Christmas market you’re visiting.
If you’re going to a German Christmas market outside of Germany, like Birmingham’s German Christmas market in the UK, there’s plenty of beer on offer. And the Ludwigsburg Christmas market near Stuttgart definitely sells beer.
On the other hand, Christmas markets at smaller towns in Germany might not have beer for sale. Instead, they choose to stick to the traditional fare of hot, spiced wine.
So what makes the difference? German Christmas markets have been exported all over the world. And to ensure the punters are happy, they try to cater for all tastes. The smaller German Christmas markets across Germany might not be allowed to sell beer, and that’s just down to the council’s decision makers.
So can I drink beer at the Christmas market? Yes, you absolutely can do. But it probably depends on the size of the market.
